Overview:
All filming and photography activities on Tufts University’s campuses are arranged and coordinated through the Tufts University Office of Public Relations. The University's film policy is designed to minimize disruption of normal university activities. No film location requests will be approved which seriously disrupt the normal activities of the University.
Requests to film on campus for commercial, non-news purposes must be made in writing and include the following information:
- Name of production company
- Contact Information of primary contact
- Locations requested
- Date and time of shooting
- Length of shooting
- Number of people involved in each day’s shooting
- Type of activity to be filmed, taped or photographed
- List of equipment and vehicles used in connection with the project
The policy for film and photo shoots will not apply to news and public affairs coverage of university events, activities and personalities by television, film or sound recording.
Submitting A Request:
All requests for commercial film and photo shoots must be made to the Tufts University Office of Public Relations (T: 617-627-3069 ; F: 617-627-4907) Requests for filming must normally be made at least two (2) weeks in advance, and in no case will be accepted fewer than ten (10) days in advance.
Tufts Public Relations reserves the right to refuse any request for filming on the premises of the University.
Use of University Facilities:
For interior locations, the Office of Public Relations must secure approval from the division(s) and/or departments occupying the space requested.
No major set construction or alteration of buildings will be permitted. Any set decoration must be clearly specified in writing and all areas occupied in connection with the filming must be returned to their normal condition.
Film crews are restricted to filming in the agreed upon location. No students, faculty, staff or visitors may be filmed without their written consent.
A representative of Tufts Public Relations must be on site during filming.
Unless specifically approved by the Office of Public Relations, vehicles will not be allowed at the shooting location. Parking passes can be purchased from Tufts’ Department of Public Safety by calling 617-627-3030.
Script Approval:
A copy of the final script or storyboard must be submitted for approval to Public Relations, and approval must be granted prior to signing the contract letter agreement.
Location Fees:
A location fee of ten thousand dollars ($10,000), per day, will be charged to any production agency using University locations for the purposes of producing feature films, television commercials, general entertainment programs. Tufts University alumni are eligible for a 15 percent discount on location fees.
Additional Fees:
The cost of any additional services provided by the University, including security, parking, trades and caretaking, will be charged in addition to the location fee.
Fees will be charged for dressing and/or striking a set (if done on days other than those specified for filming).

Insurance Requirements:
The production company must have certificate of insurance of no less than one million dollars ($1 million) that lists Tufts University as co-insured in the applicant’s policy. The Office of Public Relations must receive your proof of insurance at least seven days before your shoot.
Larger-scale productions may have higher minimum insurance requirements.
Use of University Trademarks, Symbols, Locations:
The Tufts University name, seal and logos may not be used without the written permission of the University. Written permission is also required for the use of University logo clothing and other items, such as pennants, for use as costumes and set dressing.
No mention is to be made of or recognition given to Tufts University unless specifically authorized.
