Tufts Magazine

Tufts Mag Thumb 2008Overview:
Tufts Magazine is a quarterly publication sent to all Tufts alumni, parents of current undergraduates, and friends who have given $1000 or more in the past fiscal year. It is the main means of communications for alumni, and selected features are presented online at www.tufts.edu/alumni/magazine.

Tufts Magazine’s role is not only to share information, but to build community. It finds and describes those aspects of Tufts that resonate with alumni from different generations and backgrounds; it can inform, entertain, amuse, and enlighten. Given this broad role, versatility and variety, as well as excellence and attractiveness, are key to its success as a general interest magazine with an affinity twist. It also seeks to reinforce the idea of lifelong learning and to engage its readers in critical thinking.

The magazine's mission is to exemplify and illustrate the values and characteristics of Tufts University. Tufts Magazine aims to stimulate thinking, to share important work in research and new scholarship, amuse and entertain, and build life-long affinity for Tufts with stories, photographs, and design that highlight extraordinary activities of students, faculty, and alumni. Our content reflects the main themes underlying other university “branding” efforts, such as leadership in educating global leaders, research and innovation in the life sciences, and active citizenship.

Tufts Magazine also endorses the Principles of Practice for University and College Periodicals Editors, as approved by the CASE Board of Trustees in November, 2005. This document outlines the fundamental ethical obligations of editors and the most successful operational principles for college and university periodicals. Central to the operational principles is a belief that university magazine editors are “stewards of a key communication instrument, and advocate for strategies that maximize readership and ensure the periodical’s effectiveness.”
