Description of service
Formmail is a script, managed by Web Communications, which formats and delivers web form submissions from forms hosted within the tufts.edu domain. Formmail includes optional features such as required field checks, thank you page redirection, and the ability to specify a custom email subject. Use of formmail requires a set-up procedure with Web Communications, but is open to all Tufts webmasters.
Availability of the service
Web Communications manages the Formmail script and works with University Systems Group to maintain the server where the script resides. We expect that the scripting service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, as with any service, it may be subject to infrequent disruptions due to unforeseen circumstances or maintenance requirements. Webmasters should plan accordingly. We recommend that you maintain backup copies of any mission-critical forms, coded with mailto links for submission, in the unlikely event of a lengthy service disruption.
Notification
In the event of a known, unplanned, service disruption occurring during business hours and lasting more than 15 minutes, Web Communications will notify formmail recipients of the disruption and its estimated duration, if available. We will send you email and post to Infoboard the details of the disruption and notify you again when the service resumes.
Scheduled service disruptions will be communicated no fewer than 2 business days prior to the work. All communication regarding maintenance or planned disruptions will occur via email to the form recipient address supplied by you and will also be posted on the Infoboard.
Email Misuse
Web Communications Formmail is designed to prevent the possibility of misuse of destination email addresses. This is accomplished by detaching the normally visible address from the form itself. Please be aware that while this action helps to limit unsolicited messages and other forms of email abuse, it is not an absolute guarantee of address privacy. Webmasters should use destination addresses or aliases normally designated for business use. If you do run into problems, please let Web Communications know so we can examine if there are ways to end the abuse.
Contact Information
Please notify Web Communications if there are changes to either the formmail recipient address or ownership information, including cancellation of usage for a particular address. This will allow us to make sure that any communications regarding this service reach the appropriate people.
